Church Buddy Call :: Being Available

Church Buddy Call                     2024 March 25      A  good c hurch buddy called at 6 or 7 this morning and we had a wonderful chat, or, as best as you can expect over the phone.      In parting, he asked me how he could be praying for me.   I asked for prayers that I could rest transparently in Christ with fuller satisfaction so that I would not feel the urge to self-medicate with more food (typically corn chips). But, I should have asked for something more dear to my heart. Hindsight is 20/20.  Availability:     Please pray that our church members make themselves more available for each other, that we can knock on doors and visit freely, hanging out indefinitely, face-to-face....

Cross-over Scholars

I dislike scholars who presume to merit attention when they propound upon topics clearly outside the purview of their field, shooting from the hip, as it were, or speaking from their feelings and opinions on the new subject, foreign to their field of study. This tendency seems to have become increasingly common in just the past few decades, precisely because it has been tolerated, even encouraged, within academia.          That said, I do like scholars who get a second Ph.D. and/or then develop extensive familiarity with the literature of a differing field from their initial Ph.D.          The man who drew me into graduate studies in business (from my heavy humanities background) taught me just one course (the sole course I had ever had in business or social science, an undergraduate level introduction to organizational behavior.  He had a Ph.D. in OB, built upon a previous Ph.D. in Philosophy fr...

A New Job

2024 March 20      I began a new job about six weeks ago, and it has been enough time to see me adjust and adapt, with the LORD changing me in several ways:  A. to fit the new schedule, B. to Show his glory, and C. to use my adaptation as an object example to my family members and to members of my local community of the saints.    Long Term Sub:       I am a long-term substitute teacher at the local high school.  It maketh me to want to continue study of math to where I am competent in all areas taught in NC public high schools.  And, to where I am adept at basic calculations in my head, quick to add and multiply three-digit numbers or maybe even four someday!  It would be a good influence to my students for them to see me grow in this respect.  At my age, they would get the infectious sense that anything is possible for their young minds... if but they apply themselves with vigorous love and affection for math. ...

Public Education as a Cultural Construct

That Thy Days May Be Long On This Earth... 22nd March 2024: https://www.boundless.org/advice/does-the-very-act-of-sex-cause-you-to-be-married/      I find myself delighting in mathematics, again, after some decades. I am serving as a long term math substitute at the local high school.  I have freshmen and sophomore honors students in First Period, 2nd Period, and 3rd and 4th periods for remedial math, students with IEPs, and a substantial number of students from other cultures who now use English as their second language, which presents some distinctive roadblocks to their ability to understand concepts presented in the language of instruction, English.        I believe I sense their confusion far better than the other math teachers here, due to my experience living in a non-Western culture from 1996 to 2011 (South Korea), and in teaching 33,520 hours of ESL there in my private ESL business and in three universities. I preferred the uni...
